History

1924 Hamilton Technical College is founded to provide technical and trades training in the Waikato region.

1968 Name changes to Waikato Technical Institute with a wide range of programmes within engineering, science, accountancy, business management and building trades.

2001 Name changes to the Waikato Institute of Technology and two years later, the modern Wintec brand is adopted.

Education

We offer over 130 courses and qualifications at a variety of levels. From entry-level foundation studies that help you prepare for study; to hands-on technical training in vocational subjects (such as trades, horticulture, cooking); diplomas and degrees in a broad range of subjects (such a nursing, physiotherapy, social practice, science, business, information technology, media arts, and sport science); and postgraduate and master's qualifications in many specialist fields.

Research

In line with Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) requirements, our students benefit from our academic staff being active researchers who keep abreast of and contribute to knowledge creation in their respective fields.

The Wintec research aspirations go well beyond this. Driven by the research office, the institution proactively seeks to open spaces for research and innovation

We offer international student support services at both our Rotokauri and City campuses, which provides students with a range of well-being and support options including:

During your studies, you will have the chance to attend a number of presentations and workshops organised by the International Centre. These will cover topics such as gaining employment in New Zealand, international student rights when working, and the New Zealand work culture.

Housing services

Homestay is where you stay with New Zealand families, in their homes. Our Homestay hosts are carefully selected for their kind and caring nature.

You will get to improve your English by talking to them; you will also be able to enjoy family activities, celebrations, religious practices, and sporting events.

Only a five minute walk from the Wintec City Campus and downtown Hamilton, the Wintec Student Village offers a relaxed atmosphere, a pastoral care environment and a range of social and cultural activities through the year.

Wintec Apartments offer a modern, self-catered style of accommodation situated in a three-level apartment complex building located on the Wintec City Campus.

Library services

Wintec Library has a large number of digital resources, from our single-search system OneSearch to our hundreds of thousands of online ebooks and millions of academic journal articles.

ICT services

Information Technology Services (ITS) is based in the Gallagher Hub at the City Campus, and in the Hub at the Rotokauri Campus, providing IT support to all Wintec students. 

The team can assist with a wide range of IT-related issues including:

  • Internet Access
  • Moodle
  • Free Office 365 for Students

Medical services

Health Services are a nurse-led practice. This means that our nurses are specially trained to provide you with a high level of care.

When you make an appointment with us, you will speak to or have an appointment with a nurse who will assess your needs, provide health care and/or book your time with a doctor.

Campus life

Our City Campus is located in the heart of Hamilton’s CBD. There is onsite accommodation and snack spots throughout the Hub, with eateries, shops, the Waikato River, Hamilton’s Lake Rotoroa, and public transport just a short walk away.

If you want to study sport science, trades, engineering, animal care or hospitality and cookery, you’ll be based out at our Rotokauri Campus. You’ll be learning in some of the best purpose-built facilities in New Zealand and relaxing in a modern Student Hub with access to a library, computers and coffee.

The Gardens Campus gives you the unique opportunity to study arboriculture, horticulture or landscape design and construction in a hands-on, practical setting.

Sports facilities

Wintec's Sport Science facilities are amongst New Zealand's best. We have dedicated research testing labs, biochemistry labs, exercise physiology labs and a dedicated biomechanics lab.  As a student, you will have access to "state-of-the-art sport testing and consulting - as used by national and international athletes.

Student clubs

Wintec Students’ Association (SAWIT) acts as a source of independent advocacy, information and representation for students. Membership of SAWIT is voluntary and makes you eligible for all sorts of benefits, including subsidised USBs, binding, advice and much more. SAWIT is also the point of contact for Student Job Search for all Wintec students.

Wintec was the first tertiary provider in New Zealand to receive the GenderTick in 2020.

Wintec is the first workplace in the Waikato to be awarded Gold Standard WorkWell Accreditation
