1924 Hamilton Technical College is founded to provide technical and trades training in the Waikato region.
1968 Name changes to Waikato Technical Institute with a wide range of programmes within engineering, science, accountancy, business management and building trades.
2001 Name changes to the Waikato Institute of Technology and two years later, the modern Wintec brand is adopted.
We offer over 130 courses and qualifications at a variety of levels. From entry-level foundation studies that help you prepare for study; to hands-on technical training in vocational subjects (such as trades, horticulture, cooking); diplomas and degrees in a broad range of subjects (such a nursing, physiotherapy, social practice, science, business, information technology, media arts, and sport science); and postgraduate and master's qualifications in many specialist fields.
In line with Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) requirements, our students benefit from our academic staff being active researchers who keep abreast of and contribute to knowledge creation in their respective fields.

Health Services are a nurse-led practice. This means that our nurses are specially trained to provide you with a high level of care.
When you make an appointment with us, you will speak to or have an appointment with a nurse who will assess your needs, provide health care and/or book your time with a doctor.
Our City Campus is located in the heart of Hamilton’s CBD. There is onsite accommodation and snack spots throughout the Hub, with eateries, shops, the Waikato River, Hamilton’s Lake Rotoroa, and public transport just a short walk away.
If you want to study sport science, trades, engineering, animal care or hospitality and cookery, you’ll be based out at our Rotokauri Campus. You’ll be learning in some of the best purpose-built facilities in New Zealand and relaxing in a modern Student Hub with access to a library, computers and coffee.
The Gardens Campus gives you the unique opportunity to study arboriculture, horticulture or landscape design and construction in a hands-on, practical setting.
Wintec's Sport Science facilities are amongst New Zealand's best. We have dedicated research testing labs, biochemistry labs, exercise physiology labs and a dedicated biomechanics lab. Wintec Students’ Association (SAWIT) acts as a source of independent advocacy, information and representation for students. Membership of SAWIT is voluntary and makes you eligible for all sorts of benefits, including subsidised USBs, binding, advice and much more. SAWIT is also the point of contact for Student Job Search for all Wintec students.
