The Nelson Technical School (the forerunner of NMIT) was set up in 1904 and the building was designed by Stead Ellis, a trained architect and secretary to the Nelson Education Board. The doors opened in 1905, initially offering classes in cookery, engineering, woodwork, commerce, craft, secretarial and plumbing.
Since the mid 1990s, we have attracted significant numbers of international students.
NMIT offers more than 100 programmes at certificate, diploma or degree level across a broad range of study areas.Based in Te Tauihu, abundant in natural resources, we specialise in studies to support the region. This gives our ākonga (students) access to high-quality facilities and equipment and connects them to industry leaders and employers, offering practical study and direct employment opportunities. With study designed to fit around life, you can study on campus, online or on the job, see more about flexible learning here.
