History

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences offers a wide range of undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research based programmes for postgraduates. The Faculty is comprised of six academic departments/schools, and a wide variety of research centres, groups and clusters.

Education

18 degree programmes are teached in English; European Studies; French; Gaeilge; German; History; International Relations; Japanese; Journalism; Law; New Media; Politics; Public Administration; Sociology; Spanish; Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and Technical Writing.

Research

Research excellence lies at the heart of what we do in the faculty. Our research is outward looking, critically engaged and globally focused. It informs our teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and it contributes to sustaining a vibrant postgraduate research culture.

Student services

The University of Limerick has in place support structures for personal (health, counseling etc) and Academic welfare (Maths and Science Learning Centers; a Writing Centre and Careers Service), with copious amounts of on campus accommodation on a self contained campus.

Housing services

The University is a self contained campus on a 133 hectare site. In term time the campus accommodation is home for 2500 students, with copious amounts of local accommodation being available. Apart from modern well equipped teaching facilities, the University provides medical, pastoral, counselling and careers services for the well being of students. Academically there is a writing centre a maths learning centre and a science learning centre.

Library services

The main goal of the Digital Library is to improve access to materials, many of which are old and rare and were only available to view in hard copy print format heretofore. The majority of the digitised material will become searchable via databases on the Internet.

ICT services

There is no need to worry about the oil running low or the TV licence collector calling at the door. When you live in residence, light and heat are included as well as a high speed internet connection, maintenance service, cable TV, TV licence and weekly refuse collection.

Medical services

The Medical Centre provides an emergency triage service for MIC student’s on-campus. We offer a private and confidential service weekdays during term time. It is a triage service for acute illnesses only. Students are advised to register with a local GP for the duration of their stay in Limerick. A list of local GPs is available from Student Union.

Campus life

The University is especially proud of its outstanding cultural, sporting and residential facilities, which are located on a truly beautiful campus. It is an environment that enriches and enhances the learning and working environment of both students and staff.

The campus alongside the modern teaching areas and laboratories offers, International standard sporting facilities including a 50m swimming pool, a sports arena with indoor running track, and numerous all weather pitches, banks, shop and entertainment facilities.

Campus Life Services aims to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment through engaging students in a number of environmental initiatives throughout the term.

Sports facilities

In addition to the state of the art playing fields there is a Sports Pavilion which contains a reception arena, eight changing rooms (all with underfloor heating), two squad rooms and a Pavilion Bar & Restaurant. This facility is open to UL staff & students and the wider community and regions. Current resident groups include Limerick GAA, Munster Rugby Academy, we have welcomed many GAA county teams since our opening – Limerick, Clare, Kerry, Galway, Cork to mention but a few. We also have a stand-alone facility bank that includes a 400m Athletic Track (due to be refurbished and upgraded 2016), an Astroturf facility, and four Tennis Courts.
