History

The University of Bremen is a young university. It was founded in 1971 for the purpose of teacher training. What was to become known as the “Bremen Model“ was conceived in times of social reform. Its core elements apply to this day and it was these basic principles which first made the subsequent research success possible.

Education

The University of Bremen is a medium-sized German university with around 20,000 students. For its committed and talented students, Bremen offers a wide range of subjects: More than 100 masters programs and bachelor programs, as well as the state law exam. And with research-based learning, the University has reinterpreted project studies, a defining feature originating from when it was founded. 2,500 academics (41%), among them 270 professors (29% women), teach and research in a wide range of disciplines: In the natural sciences, engineering, the social sciences and the humanities as well as in teacher training, we have a long established tradition in interdisciplinary cooperation and excellent research.

Research

Together with the local research institutes and cooperation partners, it constitutes the leading research hub in northwest Germany. The University is a top performer in many areas of national and international excellence. Its international research profile is shaped in particular by six high-profile areas.

Housing services

Do you want to live in a student residence, a shared flat, or with parents? Of course, only you decide where and how you want to live: You have access to the entire Bremen housing market.

In the immediate vicinity of the campus, both the Studierendenwerk Bremen and private providers offer individual apartments and shared housing at various locations in Bremen. Often the housing question boils down to the size of your purse. 

Library services

The State and University Library Bremen (SuUB) is the city's largest and oldest academic library. As the designated central library of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, the SuUB supplies literature to universities and colleges across Bremen and Bremerhaven, while also acting as the state library.

Sports facilities

University sports are open to all students, other members of the University, and also externals. They can attend the sports courses offered by Hochschulsport e.V. (Association for University Sports) and use the "UniFit" Power and Ergo Room and the offers of the AStA. The sports activities take place on campus and at other sports facilities.
