Ever since its founding in 1868, TUM has been at the forefront of innovation. TUM scientists today have the same goal as their 19th century counterparts: finding solutions to the major challenges facing society as we move forward. TUM was founded to provide the state of Bavaria with a center of learning dedicated to the natural sciences.

13 departments form the academic basis of TUM. They represent a portfolio of subjects focusing on natural sciences, engineering sciences, life and food sciences and medicine that is virtually unrivaled. Technology-oriented business management and the TUM School of Education complete these focus areas.

Technische Universität München (TUM) is one of Europes top universities for research. One of Germanys first Universities of Excellence, it achieves impressive scores in all international rankings. Its mission is to add value to society.Researchers at TUM believe that an interdisciplinary approach is the key to solving the major challenges of the future: Health & Nutrition, Energy & Natural Resources, Environment & Climate, Information & Communications, Mobility & Infrastructure.

Student Life

Campus life

The Garching campus, unlike the downtown area, is set up more like a traditional quadrangle style campus with a large grouping of buildings. At the moment, university buildings are spread over four main and several minor locations.

The heart of the university is situated on the main campus in the state capital: this houses the university headquarters, most of the administrative offices and the faculties of Architecture, Structural Engineering & Surveying, Electrical Engineering & Information Technology and Economics. The Department of Sport Science is located at the Olympic stadium, the Department of Medicine is incorporated in the TUM's Clinic 'right of the Isar'.

Sports facilities

90 sports and fitness activities: From aerobics to yoga, ZHS has it all. Keep fit classes, climbing and beach volleyball are especially popular. With 15,000 members, ZHS is the largest university sports community in Germany – bringing together students from every university in Munich.

The Alps and Lake Starnberg: ZHS makes excellent use of Munich’s surrounding countryside. Windsurfers and sailors enjoy the windy conditions on Lake Starnberg. Plus of course the Bavarian Alps, within easy distance for climbers, hikers, skiers and snowboarders.Olympic facilities: ZHS is based at the TUM campus in Munich’s Olympic Park in the north of the city, which was built for the 1972 Games.
