About

Education

Our reputation is built on our innovative approach to learning and our distinctive research and curriculum – all enriched by the people, natural environment, economy, culture and heritage of the Highlands and Islands and its communities.

We have 40,000 students at the heart of our university partnership and we are measured by their success. Our curriculum portfolio across both further and higher education is designed to meet current and future local and regional needs and to attract other students to the Highlands and Islands to study.

Research

Collaborative research grouped under four broad areas - We offer unparalleled natural laboratories and opportunities to support world-class research across a wide range of disciplines. Below you can explore in some detail our areas of expertise by either going straight to your area of interest or looking at the section overviews. In practise our researchers work across teams, networks and locations throughout the region and internationally.

Career

Over the course of your lives you will make frequent career decisions. Your career journey, alongside many other areas of your life, will be subject to constant change and the influences of unplanned events and unexpected opportunities.

Services

Housing services

Starting at university can be a daunting prospect, especially if you are moving away from home. We want you to get the most out of your studies – and your social life. Finding the right accommodation to suit you will help you to settle quickly into life as a student.

Library services

MultiSearch is the library search engine.  It provides a ‘Google-like’ way of searching many sources at the same time. The process of finding information from both the physical and digital parts of the library has become so much simpler.

ICT services

The purpose of this page is to provide an indication of the types of assistive technology that you may use during your studies - whether you have the use of a loan laptop, purchased equipment under the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), or want to know more about the accessibility settings built into your PC.

Student Life

Campus life

We are the only university based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and we're a little different - we offer you the choice of studying at one of our 13 colleges and research centres, over 70 local learning centres, or online from wherever you are.

Sports facilities

High Life Highland and the University of the Highlands and Islands have agreed a corporate partnership to provide discounted individual leisure membership for students and staff of the University. High Life Highland leisure centres, community centres, and community schools offer a range of sports facilities.

Student clubs

HISA is a tertiary students’ association that represents the interests of all further and higher education students, no matter how they study or what they study. Its structure is unique and reflects the composition of the university partnership.
