History

The University of Turin was founded in 1404 by a papal Bull issued by Pope Benedict XIII. It then developed on the initiative of Prince Ludovico of Savoia-Acaja, who was willing to establish a University on his own land, at a crossroads between the Alps, Liguria and Lombardy.

Education

  • Undergraduate degree (Laurea): it lasts three years and the entrance requirement is a "Diploma di Scuola Secondaria Superiore" (Upper Secondary School Leaving Qualification) or a qualification obtained abroad and recognized as corresponding.
  • Postgraduate degree (Laurea magistrale): it lasts two years and the entrance requirement is an undergraduate degree or a non-Italian qualification and recognized as corresponding.
  • 5-year or 6-year postgraduate degree (Laurea magistrale a ciclo unico): it lasts 5 years (Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacy, Law, Veterinary Medicine Dentistry and Dental Prosthesis) or 6 years (Medicine and Surgery). The students obtain the degree at the end of the complete cycle.

Research

The research output of the University of Turin is managed, displayed and made searchable through the IRIS-AperTO application.

Career

The University's Job Placement Service has been established in order to help its students and new graduated (who held their university degree within 12 months) to enter the labour market. The service operates on two levels: through the Job Placement offices in the individual Schools and Departments and through the central Job Placement office at the Students' Rights office.

Housing services

  • In Turin you can find several in the vicinity of university buildings where the courses are held.
  • The study rooms made available by EDISU Piemonte, are the ideal place to study between classes and to meet other students.
  • They are open to all university students.

Library services

There are 22 libraries spread over 32 locations. The Botanic Garden and several University Museums such as "Cesare Lombroso" - Criminal Anthropology Museum and "Luigi Rolando" - Human Anatomy Museum are well known.

Campus life

Situated in the North West of the country, on the banks of the Po River and surrounded by the Alps, Turin is the administrative centre of the Piedmont Region and the third biggest city in Italy. The urban area is  bordered by what has always been historically known as the "Corona delle Delizie", the crown or ring of delights, formed by the Royal Residences dotted around the outside of the city.

Sports facilities

  • Turin's great location, close to mountains, countryside, rivers and lakes, provides an excellent environment for a wide range of sports and outdoor activities.
  • Ski slopes and mountain walking trails are only an hour's drive away.
  • Rowing, rafting and kayaking are very accessible: many of the city's rowing clubs, on the banks of the Po River, were founded over a century ago.
