About

History

At less than 50 years old, Maastricht University certainly belongs in the category of Young Universities. It was only on 9 January 1976 that Queen Juliana signed the papers marking the establishment of what was then known as the Rijksuniversiteit Limburg.

Education

Maastricht University (UM) is known for its Problem-Based Learning system and international orientation. Our small-scale ‘international classroom’ brings together people from all over the world who have different backgrounds and perspectives. And it’s these very differences that make the UM learning experience unique.

The main mission of education at Maastricht University (UM) was, is and will be the integrated academic and professional development of the student. Teaching and learning therefore focus on both the academic and personal development of the student.

Research

UM multidisciplinary collaborations contribute to solving major societal issues within their primary research themes. They develop new methods to make plastics from organic materials, but we also conduct research into migration, and look into methods to get more people interested taking the necessary financial preparations for their retirement.

UM participates in centres of excellence, both technological and social, to allow scientific discoveries to be swiftly converted into practical applications. Our educational method, Problem-Based Learning, lays the groundwork for students to embrace research and the scientific method from the very first day of their studies.

Career

UM Career Services is committed to providing help to students to develop the knowledge, skills and personal attributes they will need to gain suitable employment. On the Employability Portal, you can find a broad range of opportunities to improve your employability skills. These include the best vacancy search engines, interesting internet tools and upcoming (networking) events of both internal and external parties.

Services

Student services

Maastricht University’s Student Services Centre (SSC) helps students with a wide range of issues related to studying and student life. This includes topics such as application, registration, tuition fees and diploma recognition, but you can also contact the SSC for legal advice on a study related issue, career advice or advice from a psychologist. In addition to providing students with help, the SSC supports several organisations that organise extracurricular activities, such as the INKOM, the sports council MUSST and Studium Generale.

Housing services

Maastricht Housing is the official housing agency for Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and the Jan van Eyck Academy. The main objective is to provide mediation between students, the UM Guesthouse, housing corporations, and private landlords and therewith supporting students and official employees in finding qualitative and affordable housing.

Maastricht Housing offers various unfurnished rooms, studios and apartments for students and staff who wish to rent for an indefinite period. These living spaces are owned by private landlords, real estate agents and three Maastricht housing corporations.

Library services

The University Library supports students and researchers in achieving their academic goals. We offer a modern study and research environment that is available online, 24/7, either on campus or worldwide accessible with your UM account and password: the Online Library.

ICT services

The core task of ICTS is to ensure the management and maintenance of MAASnet, the computer network at Maastricht University. ICTS is also responsible for:

  •  maintaining servers and applications
  •  making software available
  •  supporting end users
  •  coordinating ICT projects
  •  offering ICT advice

Student Life

Campus life

Campus Brussels’ facilities comprise three equipped meeting rooms – one for ca. 60 and two for ca. 25 people, which are there to be used for events by the UM community. It also provides staff support when organising online and on-site activities, from event planning and implementation (e.g. programme design, speaker search, registration management, coordination with local suppliers, etc.) to monitoring EU policy issues of interest. UM staff and students can also make use of the Academic Coworking Space at the Campus to meet and network with colleagues when in Brussels.

Sports facilities

UM SPORTS is the place for (student) sports in Maastricht. UM SPORTS offers a wide variety of sports, an extensive accommodation, wide opening hours and a good atmosphere. Whether you want to exercise for your health, to improve your fitness level, to relax, to feel more energised or to meet friends: the possibilities are endless at UM SPORTS!

Student clubs

UCM hosts the diverse and engaging UCM study association, Universalis. This multicultural and multi-disciplinary student organization, run by UCM students, aims to offer its members academic and social development opportunities as a supplement to the regular UCM curriculum. Its name and logo are derived from different interpretations of the concept of the homo universalis, a person who has developed all of his or her skills and abilities to the fullest extent. An example of such a person might be someone with not only a sharp mind, but also athletic qualities and artistic talent.

Accreditation

SBE strives for international excellence, in research as well as in education. The Triple Crown accreditation shows that we are well on the way to achieving this. The rankings show that SBE can easily compete with top institutions worldwide. Further, their ongoing self-evaluation and review processes mean that we are always improving our standards.
